Most people of faith are familiar with the concept of a tithe, or giving 10% of all income to the church. What would happen if we tithed 10% of our time to help others?

Five people who put their knowledge and life experiences to work solving challenging social problems were honored with a Purpose Prize by the American Association of Retired People (AARP).

“Studies have shown for years that people living with purpose report fewer unpleasant emotions like anxiety and depression and even less physical pain,” Michael said.

The point of “From Strength to Strength” appears to be that even though we can’t expect to perform at the same level we did in our younger years, our “crystalized intelligence” enables us to venture into new mental strongholds more aligned with our decreasing physical abilities.

“There is power when one has a sense of meaning, to pursue an aim in life. Purpose helps us on our life’s journey for it provides direction and guidance,” Diana Jaworski wrote

Some years, birthdays are a sad affair in that they remind me how little I accomplished in the previous year. Yet, there is still a lot left for me to accomplish and experience in the days I’ve been allotted.

Whether purpose is of the life-goal variety, just a feeling someone has or somewhere in between, it can be good for health and well-being, Dr. Hill noted.
