Today, I have the privilege of speaking with Dr. Terrlyn L Curry Avery, who calls herself Dr. TLC. She is a pastor, licensed psychologist, author and racial healing practitioner whose work sits at the intersection of faith, psychology and justice.
Dr. TLC is the pastor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Mass. It is a congregation that has spent the last several years rebuilding after their church was burned down in a hate crime.
She is also the founder of Sacred Intelligence, where she helps individuals and organizations heal from the inside out and live into their fullest purpose. She wrote a book titled, “Dismantling Racism: Healing From the Inside Out.”
In this conversation, Dr. TLC shares what it looks like to step more fully into calling and meaning after 50, not by starting over, but by expanding the work you were already born to do.
Here are a few takeaways you’ll hear in this episode.
- First, Terrlyn explains how purpose after 50 often isn’t a sharp turn, but a widening path. Her move from psychology into ministry didn’t replace her earlier work. It deepened it and gave her new ways to serve and lead.
- Second, she talks about sacred intelligence and the three relationships that shape our lives. Those include our sacred relationship with God or a higher source, our relationship with ourselves and our shared relationship with others.
- Third, Terrlyn shares why boundaries, rest and learning to say no are essential, especially for women and caregivers who are used to saying yes to everyone else.
- Finally, she reminds us that faith doesn’t mean having the whole plan figured out. It means taking the next step, even when you can’t see the whole staircase.
This is a thoughtful, honest conversation about calling, courage and what it means to keep growing and serving after turning 50.
What gives Dr. TLC meaning and purpose after 50 is helping people heal at the deepest level.
That includes healing from religious wounds, dismantling racism, learning to live with intention and helping people step fully into who they were created to be.
Her work is grounded in faith, compassion and a belief that none of us are ever done growing. Even after trauma, disappointment or even decades of doing good work, there is still more calling us forward.
